Steve Novick is a candidate for Portland City Council in District 3 (Southeast Portland).
Novick is a Special Assistant Attorney General in the Oregon Justice Department, focusing on environmental law. As a former Portland City Commissioner, Novick served one term at City Hall from 2013 to 2017. During his tenure, he advocated for zoning reform and championed the Fix Our Streets measure passed by Portland voters in 2016 to fund paving projects and pedestrian and bike safety improvements.
In 2008, Novick narrowly lost the primary election for U.S. Senate to Senator Jeff Merkley.
Novick’s priorities include increasing the number of affordable housing units, reforming zoning laws to boost private sector housing production, expanding and diversifying the police force, promoting public transit and walkability, and cutting carbon emissions. Specifically, he advocates for interim housing solutions like sleeping pods in Safe Rest Villages and the adoption of smart gun technology to prevent youth suicides and reduce gun crimes.
