Jonathan Tasini is a candidate for City Council in District 2 (North/Northeast Portland).
Tasini is a union organizer, political consultant, and published author. His resume includes stumping for presidential candidate Bernie Sanders, and reporting on labor issues and economics for publications, such as the New York Times Magazine, The Atlantic, and the Wall Street Journal.
Formerly the president of the National Writers Union, Tasini was the lead plaintiff in a lawsuit on behalf of unpaid bloggers against the Huffington Post. While living in New York, he unsuccessfully challenged Senator Hillary Clinton for the Democratic nomination in the 2006 Senate election and later ran for New York’s 15th Congressional District in 2010. He currently serves as a Precinct Committee Person for the Multnomah County Democrats.
Tasini’s campaign website highlights his priorities as neighborhoods, economic security, workers’ rights, a four-day workweek, affordable housing, and climate change. Specific policy proposals include rolling out affordable public broadband and a fossil fuel risk bond program that would ensure that the fossil fuel industry bears the full cost of damages associated with the transportation and storage of fossil fuels.
